Marjorie Mary Thorn, 82, a beloved wife and devoted mother, and a long-time resident, of Joplin, MO, passed away at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday December 10, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Marjorie was born June 7, 1931, in Luana, Iowa, the youngest of four daughters, to the late Ray and Celia Mitchell. On December 27, 1947 she married Roy W. Thorn Jr., in Decorah Iowa. After Roy was drafted in 1951, they moved to San Antonio, TX, for his Basic Training, and then to Camp Crowder, in Neosho to finish out his military service, and then moving to Diamond, MO, Henry, IL, and eventually to Joplin, MO. While living in Henry, IL, she worked part-time for the Welcome Wagon Company and the Henry Grade School.
Marjorie was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, gardening, flowers, bowling, playing cards and games with her grand kids, and volunteering for several organizations and attending services at St. Peters Church in Joplin. She loved Flea Markets and Yard Sales.
Most of all, Marjorie cherished her family and friends, especially her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.
Majorie was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters; Regina and Lillion.
She is survived by her husband Roy W. Thorn Jr. of the home, her four children; Donald J. Thorn, of Joplin, MO, Pamala Carrier and husband Dennis, of Joplin, MO, Roy W. Thorn III, of Joplin, MO, Mike Thorn and wife, Lee Ann of Bartlesville, OK, eight grandchildren; Stacy Thorn, of Duncan, OK, Brandi Carrier, of Alexandria, VA, Tiffney Testerman and husband Nick, of Joplin, MO, Lindsay Smith, of Oklahoma City, OK, Ryan Thorn, of Stamford, CT, Mark Thorn, of Bartlesville, OK, Craig Thorn, of Bartlesville, OK, Megan Norman and husband Joey, of Kansas City, MO, four great-grandchildren; Keely Thorn, of Duncan, OK, Lillian Testerman, of Joplin, MO, Luke Wood, of Oklahoma City, OK, Josephine Testerman, of Joplin, MO; a sister Helen Vick, of Decorah, IA, a sister-in-law Bonnie Thorn, of Des Moines, IA, plus several nieces and nephews and their children.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 14, with Funeral Services starting at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 14, at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary, of Joplin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the March of Dimes or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory, of Joplin.
