John Spence, age 71, Joplin, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
John was born September 13, 1942 in Dryers, Arkansas, son of the late Henry Larkin Spence and Ila Mae Bryant Spence. He served in the United States Navy, worked most of his life as a truck driver for Yellow Freight, and most recently he was operating a dump truck and hauling business in the Joplin area.
John loved being with his family, and was known for his great bar-b-que. He also enjoyed watching bull riding and boxing, and spent many hours in the woods coon hunting. He was a member of Perseverance Service, ATA Hall, and Central City Christian Church. He was formerly a member of Greenwood Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Diane M. Spence whom he married July 29, 1967, she passed away on January 22, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, James, Jack, Rick and William; and sisters, Lucille Lundien, Faye Stanlan, and Dell Richardson.
Survivors include his wife, Nolene, whom he married September 4, 2011; son, William Spence and wife Kim; daughter, Angela Plank and husband Allan all of Springfield, Missouri; brother, T.B. "TBone" Therrell of Jackson, Tennessee; sisters, Edna "Sissy" Hunter of Yuma, Arizona, Olera Hartt of Nacogdoches, Texas, Henrietta Morgan of Joplin, and Opal Bernstein of Greenville, South Carolina; grandchildren, Lauren Spence and fiance' Luke Shelton, Lakynn Spence, Lawson Spence, and Aidan Plank.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 26, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until service time.
Interment will be Friday, December 27, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in Missouri Veteran's Cemetery, Springfield, Missouri.
