Helen Marie Lea, age 63, Carthage, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Monday, January 6, 2014 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage, following an illness.
Helen was born September 10, 1950 in Coulterville, Illinois to the late Leslie ‘Doc’ Gerlach and Eva Gerlach and had lived in Carthage since 1997 moving from Little Rock, Arkansas.
She worked in the deli at the Carthage Wal-Mart for ten years and also worked in the cafeteria at Butterball in Carthage for 6 years. Helen was a foster mother to 243 kids over a fifteen year span.
She is survived by a daughter, Lori Hughes and her husband, Burton, Carthage; three grandchildren, April Davis, Cory Taunton and his wife, Kaetlyn, Dakota Cano; two great grandchildren, Xander Moreland and Cami Moreland; siblings, Floyd Green and his wife, Pat, Ruth Groth, Opal Johnson, Genevieve McKinley; 24 nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend, Karen Kempfer.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by siblings, Lawrence Green, Vernon Green, Delbert Green, Ivan Green and Vivian Green.
Helen has been taken for cremation. Family services are being planned for a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
