Gwyn Dake

(From Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home)

On June 28, 2022, Gwyndolyn “Gwyn” Ruth (nee Russell) Dake passed away peacefully at 9:46 p.m. at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

She was a loving, caring and special wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and member of the Miller community.

Gwyn spent countless hours involved with her children and grandchildren’s activities in school, sports, and other organizations. She was an active member of her community and was involved in many organizations over her lifetime.

Known to many as “Momma” she was asked to cook and provide meals for numerous local events and celebrations in her community. Always ready and willing to help those asking for her help, she was only a phone call away from leaving home and going to aid those in need of assistance with clothes, food or whatever was needed.

Driven by her strong faith and love of helping others, she played an active role in many organizations. Gwyn was a faithful member of St. Susanne Catholic Church, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the Lawrence County Ambulance Board of Directors (25 years), the Lawrence County Senior Citizens Tax Board, Miller R-2 School Board (9 years) and the Lawrence County Democrats.

Gwyn also served as president of the Miller Senior Citizens Center (12 years), president for Miller Youth Baseball and director of the Miller High School ISS room for many years.

Finally, Gwyn was a founding member and director of the Miller Christian Service Center, and she was instrumental in the building of the Food Pantry where she also served as its director.

She was born in Riverside, California, on November 20, 1940, to Gwyn and Ruth (nee Bryant) Russell. The family moved to Carl Junction, Missouri, in the late 40s where she graduated from Carl Junction High School in 1958. After graduation she enrolled in St. John’s School of Nursing, graduating in 1961. She married Charles A. Dake on April 8, 1961, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin, Missouri.

After working at Fort Riley Military Hospital while her husband finished his degree in Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University they settled in Miller, Missouri, in 1969 to raise their family.

She became a full-time mother to seven children, a foster child and four foreign exchange students along the way. She was extremely proud of her family, and it became the primary source of her happiness. Gwyn’s last wish in life was for her family to remain close and together.

Gwyn was preceded in death by her father, mother and younger brother, James Earl Russell.

She is survived by her loving husband, of 61 years, Charles A. Dake of Miller, Missouri; seven children, Russell Dake of Miller, Missouri, Cassie (Wes) Hunt of Springfield, Missouri, Jodie (Jim) Probst of Waterloo, Illinois, Chuck (Candy) Dake of Mt. Gwyn’s old saying was: “If you cannot give me flowers while I’m alive, don’t give them to me when I pass.” In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to the St. Susanne Catholic Food Pantry, in Mt. Vernon, Missouri, in care of the funeral home, P. O. Box 108, Miller, Missouri 65707
