(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Robert C. “Bob” Landis, age 86, passed away on Wednesday November 13, 2024, following a long illness. Bob was born on January 3, 1938, in Clifton, NJ to Day Bliss and Hazel (Fleming) Landis.
Bob served in the United States Marine Corps. He then attended the University of Alabama and graduated with a BA degree in business. He was a member of Sigma Nu. He married Anne Landis and together they were blessed with three children.
Bob’s career brought him and his family to Joplin where he owned and operated Landis Construction. Bob developed many neighborhoods in Joplin during his fifty years in construction. He was the originator of the Kitchen Pass Restaurant with Kent Farley, and with the help of a friend, Bill Scearce, he later opened Champs restaurant. He was a past member of First Presbyterian Church.
Bob believed in giving back and supporting his community. He devoted his time, money and work to helping with many local projects. He was a member of the Joplin Rotary Club; a fifty year member of Twin Hills Country Club, serving several years on the Board of Directors; he served on the Board of Directors for Commerce Bank in Joplin and Pittsburg; he, along with Tom Schroeder, started the Joplin Home Builder’s Association; and he was a member of the Joplin Elk’s Lodge where he was awarded the 2009-2010 Member of the Year.
He was preceded in death by his wife Anne Landis in 2020, his grandson, Ethan Rivers in 2008, and his sister, Barbara Autrey in 2010.
Bob is survived by two sons, Robert “Bobby” Landis and wife Amy, Joplin, MO, and Michael Landis and wife Brandi, Joplin, MO; one daughter, Kathleen Rivers, Joplin, MO; one brother, Jim Landis, Daphne, AL; a brother-in-law, Larry Autrey, Orange Beach, AL; twelve grandsons, Jacob Porter, Clayton Flowers, Cole Landis, Austin Landis, Blake Landis, Gavin Landis, Jaxon Landis, Grant Landis, Garrett Landis, Grayson Landis, Zack Rivers, and Tanner Rivers; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Mason-Woodard Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Pastor Shane Munn will officiate. Burial will be in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to The Joplin Elk’s Lodge Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket Program in care of the mortuary.
