Benjamin Cooley

Benjamin Orlan Cooley, 89, a former long term resident of Neosho, went to be with the Lord on June 28, 2014 with his family by his side in Overland Park, Kansas.

 He was born on March 29, 1925 in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Ralph and Elva Engle Cooley. Orlan graduated from Chapman High School working on the family farm outside of Abilene and went on to Kansas State University to receive his college degree. Orlan was blessed to be married to two wonderful women in his lifetime.

 He was married to the late Elizabeth Thomason in 1952 and they lived in the Neosho area until her death in 1984. Orlan and the late Janis Shonkwiler, who also lost her first husband to cancer, remarried and were together for nearly twenty-five years before her death in 2013. Orlan greatly loved his family. Ray Elliott

Ray L. Elliott, 83, Neosho, died July 1, 2014 at Spring River Christian Village in Joplin, following a short illness.

 Ray was born Sept. 18, 1930 in Pryor, OK and moved from Oklahoma to Neosho in 1963. He worked as an agent and telegrapher for the Frisco Railroad for 30 years and then worked for Burlington Northern for 5 years, working a total of 35 years for the railroad. He was a communication officer for the civil defense and deputy sheriff for Newton and McDonald County and a Ham Radio Operator. He is a former member of the Abundant Life Church, where he served as a Deacon and with the van ministry. 

Ray married Gladys (Clark) on Sept. 17, 1954 in Holdenville, OK and she survives. He is also survived by a son, Ray E. Elliott and wife, Deborah, Neosho and two grandchildren, Hannah Rae Elliott and Caleb Michael Elliott.

Frankie Grissom

David F. ‘Frankie’ Grissom, 63, Bradenton, FL, formerly of Neosho, died June 29, 2014 at his home in Bradenton, following an illness.

 Frankie was born Dec. 1, 1950 in Neosho, MO, the son of Norman Lee and June (White) Grissom. He graduated from Neosho High School in 1969 and following graduation was drafted into the U.S. Army. He moved to Florida in 2002 from Neosho and worked at the Manity County Florida Parks Department. He enjoyed golfing, baseball and spending time with is his friends. Frankie is survived by his mother, June Grissom of Neosho; a daughter, Cherie; a granddaughter and two sisters, Normadene Rhames and Karen Wilson and husband, Rick all of Neosho. 

He is preceded in death by his father, Norman Grissom.

The family will announce services at a later date.

Bob Bradley

Bobbie Dan ‘Bob’ Bradley, 82, Neosho, entered into rest on July 02, 2014 in Neosho. 

Bob was born May 19, 1932 in Weir, Kansas to Arthur and Muriel (Kelly) Bradley. He was Superintendent of Military Overhaul at Teledyne in Neosho, MO. Bob served in the Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is a member of the St. Canera’s Catholic Church. Bob and Natalie ‘Nettie’ Bradley were married on March 26, 1983. She survives.

 
He is also survived by two sons, Jeff Bradley and wife Marilyn, and Greg Bradley and wife Spring. Additional survivors include: step-children Carl Garner, Emile Bowman, Debbie Ware and Stephen Garner; a sister, Betty Koepke, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Hansen and Joan France.

Jesse Spurgeon

Jesse Michael Spurgeon went to be with his wife, Diane, Monday, June 30, 2014 at 6:15 A.M. He had been a patient at Landmark Hospital where he passed. Jesse was born February 17, 1961 to Zenanna Morris and Jess Hill.

Jesse was a life long truck driver which he loved doing until his health wouldn't allow it.

He was preceded in death by his mom, Zenanna Morris, his dad, Jess Hill, two brothers, Max and Steve Spurgeon, and a sister, Sandy Morris. He lost his wife, Diane, July 17, 2013.

Jesse is survived by five daughters, Heather and husband Randy, Carmen and husband Kris, Elsie Thompson, Ashley Stephans, and Devon and boyfriend, Bobby. Jesse was also blessed with four grandsons, Tristan, Kaleb, Jared and Landon; and five granddaughters, Madison, Alexie, Charity, Layla and Keeana. Also surviving are three brothers, Frank and wife Carol, Melvin Morris, and Sheldon Spurgeon; and two sisters, Sheila and husband Kelly, and Nancy and husband Stanley. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and good friends.

Jesse and his late wife, Diane, loved Harleys and the peace and quiet of the country. They would rather be on the creek bank fishing than any place else. I'm sure that's what they are doing right now.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Wanda Ast

Wanda (Witt) Ast, 48, of Monett, MO, passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 4:44 am after conquering cancer for 16 months. She is survived by her husband, Mike Ast; four daughters: Lastacia (Davis) & Simon Tottingham of Seneca, Cassie (Davis) & Craig Potts of Springfield, Mackenzie Ast & Whitney Ast of Monett; one granddaughter: Madyson Tottingham; three sisters: Vickie (Witt) & Don Iman of Pierce City, Donna (Witt) & Bob Neff of Springfield, Sarah Witt of Monett; two brothers: Richard & Colette Witt of Marionville, Leonard & Tina Witt of Monett.

Wanda was a 1984 graduate of Monett High School. She was well known for her encouraging and energetic personality. Her sweet smile and warm laughter will always be remembered. She worked for the USDA at Southwest City, MO.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 5th at the First Baptist Church located at 21819 Highway 97, Pierce City, MO. Visitation will start at 11:00 a.m. with the funeral to immediately follow at 1:00 p.m.. Graveside services will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Monett. She will be buried beside her parents, Joann (Boke) & Victor Witt, and brother, Patrick Witt. Memorial contributions can be made to Ast Family to assist with the children’s education in care of the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.

Terry Herron

Terry Bill Herron, 73, Neosho, died June 29, 2014 in Neosho. 

Terry was born Feb. 10, 1941 in Joplin, the son of William O. and Hazel Pauline (Beeler) Herron. He served in the National Guard, November 1965 through November 1986. Terry was a police officer, beginning his career in 1975 and retired in 1994. He served as the Chief of Police for the City of Neosho, 1991 through 1994. He was a private pilot and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, flying and outdoor activities. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

 Terry and Carole (Simpson) were married on March 15, 1968 and shared 46 years, together, Carole survives of the home. Also surviving are four children, Steven Herron and wife, Cindy, Springfield; William Herron and wife, Mary, Carthage; Launie Herron and husband, Max, Anderson and Susan Wallace and husband, Richard, Watertown, NY; eleven grandchildren, Crystal, Shane, Alyssa, Christopher, Faith, Tara, Tori, Stacia, Sheri, Brandyn and Bethany; seven great grandchildren, Madison, Katelyn, Brenna, Tre, Miles, Helena and Vada and a brother, Larry Herron and wife, Linda, Neosho. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Tara.
