Bernice Lane

Bernice “Stafford” Lane, 94, passed away November 16, 2015 in Joplin, MO, 

Bernice was born February 24, 1921 in Cambridge, KS to W.R. Heilig and Sara Ethyl “Payne” Heilig. She was a longtime Webb City and Carthage resident. Bernice was a seamstress and worked at Big Smith Manufacturing in Carthage,for a number of years. She was a member of the Harmony Heights Baptist Church of Joplin. 

Bernice was united in marriage to Richard “Gene” Stafford March 21, 1938 in Jasper County. He preceded her in death April 6, 1986, Bernice was united in marriage to Harlin Eugene Lane March 17, 1984 in Neosho, MO. He preceded her in death June 18, 1996. Bernice is survived by one daughter Barbara Poppe and husband Herbie of Joplin, MO, one daughter-in-law Gloria Stafford-Rye of Stockton, MO, one son-in-law Don Holland of Carthage, one sister Betty Tomlin of Oregon, nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Bernice is preceded in death by one son Richard Lee Stafford, who passed on December 15, 2006, one daughter Carolyn Holland who passed on July 8, 2014, two sisters; Imogene Bartling and Beatrice Heilig, five brothers; Ralph Heilig, Clarence Heilig, Luther Heilig, Mack Dennison and Charles Roach. 

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2015 at Harmony Heights Baptist Church of Joplin. Visitation will be Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Ulmer Funeral Home Carthage Burial will be at Fidelity Cemetery south of Carthage.
