Fred Hubbard

Fred J. Hubbard, 85, Joplin, MO, passed away Monday, November 16, 2015 at his home after a lengthy illness. 

Fred Johnson Hubbard was born March 9, 1930 in Jasper, MO; a son of the late Walker Walter Hubbard and Ethel Johnson Hubbard. He was a graduate of Jasper High School, Class of 1948 and completed two years of electronics schooling with the U. S. Navy. Fred served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 – 1953 during the Korean Conflict. He served 2 years in San Francisco and 2 years in Kodiak Alaska. He married Charlyn Ropp on May 8, 1955 in Carthage and the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May, 2015. He was a Baptist by faith.

Fred was owner of a Hobart machine company (food service) franchise store for 25 years with his store located in Joplin, MO and serviced the four state area. In 1985, he was the top U.S. salesman for the Hobart Company. He owned the Ken’s Showplace Appliance store in Joplin for 5 years, was a little league coach in the 60’s and 70’s where he was involved in building several local little league baseball facilities including the three diamond facility at Wildcat Park. He was on the board of Heritage Acres housing development for many years and assisted in finances and legal aspects of the board. He ran four flea market booths after retirement, greatly enjoying selling and trading antiques and collectables. He joined with his wife Charlyn in buying and trading postcards at regional collectable shows. Fred was known for his interest in local history and genealogy, maintaining many generations of family records.

Survivors include his wife, Charlyn, of the home; two sons, Dale (JoAnne) Hubbard, Concord, Massachusetts and (Walter) Alan Hubbard, Carthage; a daughter, Janet Hubbard, Cheney, Washington; four grandchildren, Laci, Skylar, Alicia and Julia; one sister, Wynona Probert, Jasper, MO and many nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, W.D. and George Hubbard, seven sisters, Irene Lee, Madge Wood, Dolores Weeks, Carolyn Kitterman,
Delaine Moyer, Lorraine Groom and Adeline Wagahoff.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, November 18 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage, MO. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 19 at Hackney Cemetery, NE of Carthage. Minister Gordon Souder will officiate. Memorial gifts are suggested to Ozark Mental Health Association or the American Lung Association in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO.
