Richard (Dick) E. Grote, age 78, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 8:00 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2015 at his home following a five month illness. Richard was born September 4, 1937 in White Plains, New York. He moved to Joplin in 1978 from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Richard retired in 2002 as the President of Missouri Steel Castings. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Tri-State Model Railroaders, and enjoyed his travels to various train stations and train yards. Richard’s interests included cooking, civil war history, going to the lake, traveling, and coaching his children’s sports teams.
Richard earned both Bachelor of Engineering and a Master's of Science in Metallurgy degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ where he was also a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He also earned a Masters in Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ.
Richard married Joan Ann Nonenmaker May 31, 1959 in White Plains, New York. She preceded him in death on May 26, 2002. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cheryl Grote, and a brother, Robert Grote. Survivors include two sons, Ronald D. Grote and wife Emily, Rogersville, Mo., and Richard Grote, Valley Park, Mo., three daughters, Lynn Mock and husband Kevin, Joplin, Michelle Grote, Webb City, Mo. and Janice Grote, Dallas, Tx., one brother, James Grote, Minot, North Dakota, a sister in law, Gloria Grote, White Plains, New York, nine grandchildren; Brennan, Steffan, and Dalton Mock, Lauren, Alaina, Nola, and Isla Grote, Chase Stone, and Hudson Grote, a great grandson, Raary Mock, two nephews, James Grote, and Darin Nonenmaker, his dog Buddy, and a close friend, Gladys Courtney.
A gathering in memory of Richard will be from 6-7 p.m. Friday at the Bypass, 1212 S Main St, Joplin with a reception to follow. His cremains will be buried in the Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions are requested to the Carthage Humane Society in care of the Mortuary. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
