Cynthia “Cindy” Harlene (Hallam) Smith, age 70 of Seneca, passed away at her home at 3:08 AM on Thursday, July 16, 2020.
Cindy was born in Columbus, KS on September 13, 1949 to Harley R. Hallam and Margaret A. (LaTurner) Hallam. She grew up in Badger, KS, and had lived in Columbus, KS, graduating from Columbus High School with the Class of 1966. She later went on to Pittsburg State University where she received her EDS Education Degree in the early 1980’s.
She worked as a Special Education Teacher with S.E.K. Interlocal #637, which allowed her to work in several area school districts. She retired in 2010. She was a member of the KNEA Teacher’s Union, and enjoyed crocheting, cross stitching, and working puzzles. You would often find her reading a murder mystery novel from authors like Agatha Christie.
Cindy was united in marriage with Doug Smith on November 25, 1987 in Columbus. He survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Brian Atkinson (wife, Jacque) of Arma, KS; one daughter, Kristy Jones (husband, Greg) of Scammon, KS; two step-daughters, Jetta Wilkerson (husband, Bruce) of Carl Junction, MO, and Dayna Sumler (husband, Mark) of rural Anderson, MO; one brother, Bob Hallam (wife, Ronwyn) of Badger, KS; as well as 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Margaret Hallam; one brother, Mick Hallam; and one grandson, Joseph Todd Atkinson.
Mrs. Smith has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus for cremation. A memorial visitation will be held from 7-8 PM on Monday, July 20, 2020 at Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus. In respect to COVID-19 precautions, please wear a mask and maintain social distancing.
In lieu of flowers, you can make a memorial contribution by buying a bag of dog food and delivering it to your local humane society in her name – “…and don’t buy Ol’ Roy!”.
