Roy Chappell

Dr. Roy Mack Chappell, age 89, passed away at 2:12 pm, Wednesday, September 8, 2021 in Galena KS.

Roy was born May 1, 1932 in Piggott, Arkansas. His parents were Frank and Velma (Garrett) Chappell.

He served the country in the Army National Guard from 1952 – 1954. He loved playing golf, hunting, fishing, maintaining a super clean car, and an immaculate yard. He loved reading his Bible for hours at a time.








Roy accepted the call to the ministry at the age of 16. He was an ordained minister with the Pentecostal Church of God for 64 years. He pastored numerous churches in CA and TX with his last one being in Joplin MO. 

He served as Executive Secretary in the World Missions department for the Pentecostal Church of God from 1969-1975. He was then elected as General Superintendent/Bishop for his beloved organization and he proudly served from 1975-1987. He also served as Secretary/Treasurer for Southwest TX district from 1995-2001. He was instrumental in merging Pentecostal Bible College and Southern Bible College to form Messenger College.

Roy was married to Willie Mae Haggard on November 6, 1954 in Olivehurst, CA. She preceded him in death February 22, 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Linda Denise Chappell, and three sisters, Alma Lawrence, Ilene Hill and Frances Barlett.

Roy then married Cleta Gale (Bellamy) Beers on June 4, 1994 in Joplin, MO. She survives him.

Additional survivors include his children, Steven Roy Chappell (Carrie), CO, Janiece Marie Nye (Bill), Kenosha, WI, Timothy Beers (Angela), Springdale, AR, Beth Curtis (Steven) Fayetteville, AR, and Derenda Shoemaker (Wesley), Galena, KS: two brothers, Elmer Chappell (Roberta), Millington, MI, and Marvin “Butch” Chappell (Jan), Westwood, CA; one sister, Nina Clore, Hollister, CA; 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Joplin Family Worship Center, Joplin, MO. Pastor Tim Beers, Pastor Steven Curtis, Pastor Dan Wermuth, and Pastor Bill Nye will officiate. Burial will be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin, MO under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

For those unable to attend, the funeral service will be live streamed on Joplin Family Worship Center face page. It will also be available on YouTube at JFWCtv.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm. Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Joplin Family Worship Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Messenger College, Bedford, TX in care of the funeral home.
