Mr. Darrel Eugene “Gene” Melton, 90, of Joplin, passed away December 10, 2018.
Gene was born February 25, 1928 in Oak Grove, Arkansas, to the late William and Dora Melton. He was a 1945 graduate of Seneca High School. Following high school, Gene served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On April 13, 1952 Gene was united in marriage to Virginia Fithian and to this union four children were born. He was employed for 30 years at Ozark Engineering, where he did steel fabrication. Gene was a member of Empire Baptist Church in Joplin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 66 years, Virginia Melton; a son, Kevin Melton; and four siblings, Lorene Ingram, Mary Hoagland, William Melton and Gerald Melton.
Survivors include his children, Kristy Verbryck and husband, Carey, Kenny Melton and wife, Polly and Kelley Melton and wife, Lesley; daughter-in-law, Pam Melton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mollie Tracy; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Memorial services for Gene and Virginia are 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 22, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Carl Junction with Pastor Jim Albers officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Empire Baptist Church, P.O. Box 4383, Joplin, MO 64803. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
