Marvin Messick

Marvin Earl Messick, 88, Carthage, MO, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday, March 9, 2017.

He was born August 7, 1928 in El Dorado Springs, MO to Earl Lester Messick and Eunice Magdalene (Schmidt) Messick.

Mr. Messick was an elementary school principal in Appleton City, MO for 3 years before moving to Carthage in 1960. He was the principal at Columbian School for 23 years and Pleasant Valley School for 8 years before retiring in 1991. Marvin married Sherry Lynn Bates on May 25, 1951 in Eureka Springs, AR; she preceded him in death on August 13, 2007.

He was a former deacon of First Christian Church and served as president of his Sunday School class until his illness. One of his favorite duties was faithfully counting the weekly church attendance for many years. His hobbies included playing the banjo and organ, attending blue grass festivals and daily Bible reading.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Sue Smith (husband Michael), Sebring, FL, and Anita Kaye Griffith (husband Harel), Joplin, MO; four granddaughters, Wendy Buhrman, Misty Blevins, Tess Griffith, and Tara Barnes; nine great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Gene Messick and Marion Messick, and one sister, Karren Neden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sherry Messick, a grandson, Judd Griffith, and one sister, Maxine Messick.

Visitation will be held 6-7 p.m., Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Knell Mortuary. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday, March 13, 2017 at First Christian Church, Carthage. Interment will follow the service at Fasken Cemetery, NE of Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to First Christian Church in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO 64836.
