Earl Gehrt

Dr. Earl Benjamin Gehrt, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away surrounded by family on November 13, 2018 at the age of 86 years.

 Earl was born and raised on a farm outside of Manhattan, Kansas on July 12, 1932. He served as a pilot in the United States Air Force, Strategic Air Command, during 1954-1957, primarily flying the B-36. He obtained a BS degree from Kansas State University in 1954 and received his medical degree from KU Medical School in 1962. Following an internship in Des Moines, Iowa, he began his medical career with the Ashley Clinic and Neosho Memorial Hospital, Chanute, Kansas, where he maintained a Family Practice from 1963 until retirement in 2000. During his career he served on many boards and councils, such as the State Perinatal Council, Chair of the Obstetrics Committee for the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians, the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care and was a member of the Southeast Kansas Medical Society, among others. In addition to his professional service, Earl was an active member of the community in many capacities, including his involvement with the Chanute Zion Lutheran Church, Carthage Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and as a school board member and president of District 413.

Earl married Joanne (Jody) Robbins in 1957 and they shared 61 years together before her death on May 9, 2018. Earl is survived by his four children, Stan Gehrt of Hilliard, OH, Susan (Chris) Galemore of Chanute, KS, Julie (Mike) Holec of Plano, TX and Diane (Jeff) Burghart of Neosho, MO; one brother, Buck Gehrt of Manhattan, KS; sister in law Martha Robbins of Arlington, TX and nine grandchildren, Lisa Gehrt, John Gehrt, Nicole Galemore, Lauren Galemore, Zach Holec, Kade Holec, Garrett Burghart, Connor Burghart and Claire Burghart. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Pete, sister, Geraldine and grandson, Jake Galemore.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 11 am at Zion Lutheran Church, Chanute, Kansas, with Rev. James Schnackenberg and Rev. Daniel Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at a time of visitation Sunday, November 18, 2018 from 2 to 4 pm at the church.
