Laura Atwood

Mrs. Laura Shepherd Atwood, 86, of Seneca, Missouri, departed this life on Monday, December 9, 2019, at Galena Nursing Center in Galena, Kansas, after months of declining health.

Laura entered this life on July 30, 1933, in Greenwood, Missouri, one of seven children born to the union of the late David and Priscilla (Ringold) Shepherd. She was raised in Joplin, Missouri, and was a 1951 graduate of Joplin High School. She furthered her education by attending nursing school in Oklahoma. She began her nursing career at the former Oak Hill Hospital in Joplin. She retired in 1995 from Integris Hospital in Miami, Oklahoma. She enjoyed woodworking, craft projects, reading, singing and playing the violin. She was a member of Shepherd’s Chapel Church and Joplin Symphony Orchestra.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Atwood, on January 21, 1984; and all six of her siblings.








She is survived by her daughter, Priscilla Atwood, of Seneca, Missouri; as well as a host of other family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday afternoon, December 13, 2019, from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri. Graveside services will follow at 2:45 p.m. at Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
