Velma Marie McBride, age 95, Carthage, Missouri, passed away Monday, December 23, 2019 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, with family by her side.
Velma was born August 13, 1924 in Sarcoxie, Missouri to the late Cheslie A. Cook and Ina Marie (Rosebrough) Cook. She was a 1943 graduate of Sarcoxie High School.
Velma married William R. McBride on January 1, 1950 in Madison County, Arkansas; he preceded her in death on December 30, 1980. She worked as a seamstress for Howerton Cleaners in Carthage. Velma was a member of the First Baptist Church, Carthage, where she taught Sunday School for many years, and was a part of the choir, Awana, and vacation bible school. Velma also helped deliver Meals on Wheels in Carthage.
Survivors include four children, Stanley McBride, Carthage, Chester McBride (wife Wanda), Golden, Missouri, LuEtta Sanders (husband Pete), Carterville, Missouri, and John McBride (wife Tina), Carthage; two brothers, Wendell “Chick” Cook, Yuba City, California, and Robert “Bob” Cook, Carl Junction, Missouri; one sister, Mary Walker, Lamar, Missouri; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be held 6-7 pm, Friday, December 27, 2019 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held 10 am, Saturday, December 28, 2019 at the First Baptist Church, Carthage. Interment will follow the service at Park Cemetery, Carthage. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.
