Dorothy Marlene Alsterda was born Aug. 23, 1921 at home on a small farm in Doon, Iowa. Her parents were Jacob and Winnie (DeWeerd) VantHul.
At a young age her parents moved to a ranch in the Badlands of South Dakota where she spent her formative years. During the Depression her family moved to Chicago to find work.
Here she graduated from high school and met her husband, John whom she married on Dec. 5, 1941. She was a devoted wife and mother and worked tirelessly in the family business. She loved children and taught Sunday School and Bible School and did volunteer tutoring. In later years, she enjoyed visiting the sick and those in nursing homes.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, John in 2000 and her son, Robert Alsterda in 2013. She is survived by three granddaughters, Kiersta M. Alsterda of Bradley, IL; Anitra M. Alsterda of Maryville, IN and Freddie Honeycutt of Neosho; one grandson, Peatrick Napier of Chicago, IL; three great grandchildren; one great great grandchild due to arrive in April, 2019 and one sister, Mabel Heeter.
Services will be Monday, Nov. 12, 2018 at 1 pm at the Neosho United Methodist Church, Pastor Mitch Jarvis will officiate. Graveside services and interment will be on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018 at 11 am at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, MO. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dorothy may be made to Integris Hospice or the Neosho United Methodist Church.
