(From Parker Mortuary)Morris “Gene” Eugene Day, age 97, Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at his home surrounded by family.
Gene was born October 6, 1924 in Racine, Missouri, to the late union of Jesse and Bernice (Buzzard) Day. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1942.
A few years later, he married his best friend, Grace Nadine Mapes on July 29, 1946 in Joplin, Missouri. Together they shared many memories and were blessed with 74 beloved years before her passing on August 13, 2020. Gene and Grace lived in the Joplin area until 1958 before moving to Oklahoma; they resided in Muskogee for a short time before making their permanent home in Tulsa in 1967.
Gene enlisted into the United States Army in 1943 and served as a Medical Technician. He was a medic of the 78th Infantry Division during World War II. He was awarded three bronze stars for The Ardennes and Rhineland campaigns. He was also awarded the 1945 Purple Heart and a Good Conduct Medal in 1945. He enjoyed fishing, adventures, and travel. Gene loved taking long travel trips site seeing with Grace, the kids, and grandkids.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Day; three sisters, Vivian Garrison, Marie Pearson, and Irene Lile; and one brother, Loren Day.

Gene is survived by his two daughters, Donna Abbott (Pat) and Marsha Day; five grandchildren, Kim Neafus, Tricia Abbott, Alex Abbott (Gina), Devon Bally, Brandy Vincent (David); six great-grandchildren, Haydn Abbott, Hunter Neafus, Caine Abbott, Xander Abbott, Axel Abbott, and Bodhi Bally; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. until service time in Parker Mortuary Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel. Burial to follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Parker Mortuary.
