(From Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home)Walter Douglas “Jack” Smith, 96, of Platte City, Missouri, passed away the afternoon of Friday, May 6, 2022, at Solace House, in Joplin, Missouri.
Jack Smith was born on February 2, 1926, to Rodney Frank and Maude (Redmond) Smith in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. He grew up and attended school in Ladysmith, joining the United States Navy at age 16, during World War II. Throughout his 26 years of military service in the Navy and the Air Force, Jack served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam retiring in 1970 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. For 20 years, Jack was a security guard at the Lansing State Prison.
He was a Catholic. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW, in which he had been active in earlier years. One of his favorite past times was fishing.
On April 18, 1953, Jack and Jean F. Pokorny were united in marriage in Chicago, Illinois. After 67 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on January 15, 2021.
Survivors include:
Two sons – Doug Smith of Independence, Missouri
David Smith of Wentzville, Missouri
One daughter – Julie Larson and her husband, Rick, of Joplin, Missouri
Eight grandchildren
Eleven great-grandchildren
Two great-great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; five brothers; and three sisters.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 13, 2022, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons with military honors presented by Brown-Bishop, VFW Post 704. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the service begins at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
