Curtis Long

Curtis Dean Long, age 53, of Rogersville, Missouri, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2020, at his home. He was born May 19, 1966, in Aurora, Missouri, the son of Paul Ray and Lois Elaine (Gardner) Long.

Curtis was a 1984 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, where he was voted the “Meanest Mt'neer,” was a feared lineman on the football field, by both opponents and teammates alike. He also set school records in track.

After high school he joined the United States Army from 1984 to 1989. He served in Wiesbaden, Germany with the 14th Maintenance Company with a 63 Whiskey MOS as a heavy wheel mechanic attached to the 333rd Air Defense Unit. He then served in Ft. Bragg, NC in support of the 82nd Airborne Division. After honorable discharge he was a proud veteran.

He worked many years in heavy highway concrete construction and was proud to serve his country once again as a Blackhawk helicopter mechanic under contract with the MO AVCRAD Depot Facility. Curtis enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, cooking on the grill, and was a lifelong Oakland Raiders fan.

On April 15, 1989, he married his high school sweetheart, Laura Lee Mieswinkel, in Dillon, South Carolina.








Curtis is survived by his wife of 31 years, Laura; two sons, Matthew (Jackie) Long of Diggins, Missouri and Jacob Long of Washington, DC; one grandson, Levi Long; two sisters, Debra Rodriguez of Tampa, Florida and Eva (Brett) Landes of Roeland Park, Kansas; two brothers, Herb (Mary) Long of Springfield, Missouri and Walter (Michel) Long of Pensacola, Florida; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen (Terry) Moore, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; father-in-law, Larry Mieswinkel of Wentworth, Missouri; mother-in-law, Roberta Mieswinkel, of Mt. Vernon and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lois and daughter, Caitlin Long.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Burial will be at the Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery at a later date.
