Our “Memaw”, Sue Simon, 81, of Webb City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, May 12, 2020, in Carthage.
Sue was born March 30, 1939, in Waco, Missouri, one of two children born to the union of the late Charles “Charlie” and Lois (Long) Morris. She was raised in Carl Junction and was a 1957 graduate of Carl Junction High School.
While in high school, she met Clifford Simon and they liked each other enough to spend forever together. They were married on July 5, 1958, in Carl Junction. In June 1959, they had a baby girl and named her Debra Jeanne. She was good enough so they stopped there.
Sue held various jobs throughout the years. She worked at Books-A-Million and her granddaughters enjoyed sneaking up behind her and scaring her when she was stocking shelves. She worked at Hobby Lobby in the framing department and made everything picture perfect. Sue last worked at the chiropractic office of Dr. Frack in Webb City, where he and Carrie took good care of her for the many years she spent there. Her most favorite job to reminisce about was when she and Clifford ran the Webb City Drive-In Theatre.

Our Memaw will always be remembered for being spunky, sassy and really smart-assy. We will remember her oddly large ceramic pig collection, quirky habits, calling it exactly like she saw it, her quick wit, the donut and Diet Pepsi obsession, and her colorful language because nothing makes you giggle like a grandma that cusses. She loved baseball and knew more about MLB than MLB knows about MLB. She was as cute as a bug’s ear.
It was always evident that Sue loved her great-granddogs more than her granddaughters. She loved all dogs and that’s how we knew her heart was always in the right place.
In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Morris; her husband, Clifford “Popo” Simon, in 2004; and their cherished daughter, Debbie, in 2010.
She is survived by her granddaughters, Ashley Reynolds and husband, Seth, of Oronogo, and Whitney Goodwin of Aurora, Colorado; their father, Tony Goodwin, of Webb City; her beloved great-granddogs, Ralphy, Abby, Mowgli and Marv; special extended family, Bob and Barbara Simon, of Carl Junction; as well as extended family and friends.
As we would always end our telephone talks, we’ll say to Memaw one last time – “I love you more.” We will always be your “Wild Ass Indians”.
A sincere thanks is extended to the staff at Oak Pointe of Carthage, Avalon Hospice and St. Luke’s for their direction and loving care.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2020, in the chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary with Pastor Marilyn O’Brien officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin with Rev. Bob Simon officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
Ashley and Whitney do not want flowers so don’t you dare send them. Please consider contributing to the Joplin Humane Society or to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in her memory.
Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of her granddaughter, Ashley, of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
