Haskell Carter

Haskell L Carter, age 89, passed away at 9:57 pm, Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Freeman West Hospital Joplin, MO following an illness.

Haskell was born December 10, 1930 on a farm near Rantoul, KS. His parents were Benjamin L and Esther M (Ross) Carter.

He graduated from Ottawa (KS) High School with the class of 1948. He then entered the U S Navy during the Korean War serving in the Philippines from 1953 – 1955. Haskell earned a bachelor’s degree in printing from Pitt State. Moving to Columbus in 1957, he became employed at the Columbus Daily Advocate, retiring in 1995 after 37 years as co-owner of the newspaper.








He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Columbus. He was a member of the Columbus Fire Dept, serving as fire chief for 25 years. In 1995 he became the municipal judge in Columbus and later also served in Baxter Springs and Weir KS for 22 years. He enjoyed fishing and being with his grandchildren.

Haskell was married to Hazel Marcella Smith on September 6, 1957 in Ottawa, KS. She survives.

Additional survivors include one son Eric Wayne Carter, Columbus; one daughter, Julia Yvette Duley, Webb City, MO, one sister, Edith Rader (husband, Eldon), Ottawa; 5 grandchildren, Gavin Duley, Shae Carter, Chelsey Wells, Erica Carter and Ashton Woodcock; and 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, David Lester Carter, one daughter, Carrie Marie Carter, and 2 half-brothers, Eugene McDowell and Ross McDowell.

A Private Family Funeral service will be at 10:00 am, Monday, May 18, 2020 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Pastor Jim Bowles will officiate. Friends are welcome to attend a public graveside service at Park Cemetery Pavilion, 11:00 AM. COVID-19/ Social Distancing restrictions will be adhered to; 30 people may gather at the pavilion, and any additional people may space themselves around the outside perimeter of the pavilion. The chapel service and graveside services will both be livestreamed at facebook.com/derfeltfuneralhome.com.

Public viewing hours will be from 2:00 – 6:00 pm, Sunday, May 17, 2020 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
