(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Elizabeth Ann Sternes, age 71, of Joplin, passed away on Tuesday September 6, 2022, at her home, from a sudden illness.
Elizabeth was born on May 15, 1951, in Carthage, Mo, the daughter of the late Roy and Dorothy (Buckley) Nicholls. She has been a lifetime area resident.
She graduated from Memorial High School and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and educational fraternity.
She married Clifford Allen (Sam) Sternes Sternes on December 29, 1973, and together they were blessed with one son, Garrett Leland Sternes. They were both so proud of him. While Sam was in the Navy, she served as ombudsman at several duty stations. She received commendation from the Navy for trying to help put out a fire in Navy housing, which was started by a painter in a neighboring townhouse in Vallejo, CA.
Elizabeth was a special education schoolteacher for many years for Joplin R-8. She was a Golden Apple Nominee. Prior to that she worked for Jasper County Sheltered Workshop. She was a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her son Garrett Sternes and his wife Pam, Granby, MO; three grandchildren, Alex Sternes, Lauren Sternes, and Nathan Sternes; one brother, Roy Nichols, Joplin; and one sister, Jeanne Mueller and husband Cameron, Webb City, MO.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Reverend Ted Estes will officiate. Burial will be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 5-6 pm Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel.
