Dorothy Wright

(From Bland-Brumback Funeral Home)

Dorothy Ellen Cupp Lindquist Wright

Dorothy (“Dort”) was born very prematurely on Feb 7, 1932 in Miami, Oklahoma to Harold and Liza (Wigent) Cupp. Her mother, Liza, died during childbirth, and Dorothy weighing only 2 pounds, was adopted and raised by her Aunt Ola and Uncle Carl Lindquist. She spent her early years in Joplin, MO before the family moved to Cedar County. Dorothy attended Stockton High School, graduating in 1949.

She married Julius “Don” Wright on Sept 1, 1951 and they moved to Kansas City until Don was drafted into the U.S. Army. She went with him when he was assigned to Ft. Bliss, TX, but then moved back to Jerico to be near her family when Don was stationed in Japan during the war. After he completed his duty in the Army, they returned to Independence, MO, where they spent the next 45 years. Their only child, a son, David, was born in October of 1960.

Dorothy held several jobs over the years, including receptionist for medical offices, and clerk at Sears. In the early 1970’s she and Don started a home ceramics business in their basement. After several years, they stopped making ceramics, and started another home business, Wright Quilting. Dorothy pieced the quilts and did bindings, and Don did the machine quilting. They continued this business until they moved from Independence to Windsor, MO, in 2005. Over the years, they also made quilts for many family members and friends.

In addition to sewing and quilting, some of Dorothy’s favorite things to do were growing huge gardens full of vegetables and berries with Don, canning vegetables and making jelly, and making homemade fudge and other candies at Christmas time for family and friends. She loved spending time with her family, and especially enjoyed being with the babies and children. She also loved her pets, and all animals.

Aside from Don’s time in the Army, the two were rarely ever apart. In the past few years, Dorothy and Don both suffered through a lot of health problems, and they were spending time in Florida when Don passed away in December 2016, after 65 years of marriage. Dorothy then returned to Windsor, MO in May 2017, so that she could live with her sister, Carlene, and be close to the rest of her family. She enjoyed the last year of her life spending time with loved ones but suffered a debilitating stroke in Feb 2018, and passed away peacefully on Nov 30, 2018, surrounded by her sister, Carlene, brother-in-law, Paul, and niece, Shelly.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Don, brother Bill Cupp, and close family members Charles and Treva Lindquist.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Carlene and Paul LeeMasters, of the home, her brothers Jim Lindquist of Kansas City, Leon Lindquist, Harrison Cupp, Oliver Cupp, sisters Millie Hight, Helen Lewis, and sister-in-law Carolyn Cupp, all of Joplin, one grandson David Scott Wright, former daughter-in-law Laura Burns, great granddaughters Lilly and Julia all of Kansas City, a special cousin, Alma Dixon of Independence, nephew Brad O’Connor (Tina), nieces Shelly Browder (Billy), Jennifer Lindquist, Tracy Kidwell, Dena Lindquist, Heather Sweere , and numerous special great, and great-great nieces and nephews, and her son David Wright (Donna), of Florida, and many good friends.

In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions may be made to VFW or any children’s foundation or animal rescue group.
