Services for Alberta Chesner, 83, will be held on Friday, April 1st at 2:00p.m. at Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus, KS. Burial will follow at Hosey Hill Cemetery in Weir, KS.
Alberta died Tuesday, March 29th, 2016 at Medicalodge, where she had been a resident for a number of years.
She was born June 1st, 1932, in Carona, KS, the daughter of Albert George and Anna Marie Ghilino Smith. She graduated from Mount Carmel School of Nursing. She also earned a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Pittsburg State University. Alberta worked as a Registered Nurse for many years at Wadsworth Veterans Hospital in Leavenworth, KS. In later years she worked at Maude Norton Hospital in Columbus; Baxter Memorial Hospital in Baxter Springs, KS; and taught Nurse’s Aide classes for Mount Carmel Hospital. She was a long-time member of Columbus First United Methodist Church.
Besides working as a Registered Nurse, Alberta was also a devoted mother and step-mother. All three of her daughters followed in her footsteps to become nurses. Her family was her major source of happiness and reason for living.
Alberta is survived by daughter Deborrah Zafuta and husband Paul of San Diego, CA, her daughter Nancy Starkweather and husband Rick of Joplin, MO, and her daughter Ruth Chesner of Columbus,KS. Her grandchildren include Isaac and Alyssa Zafuta, Joshua, Rebecca and Nicholas Barnett, and Lauren Dainty and Ben Jones III, and Jordan, Graham, and Chase Starkweather; along with 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and also her brother, Albert Sonny Smith.
Memorial Donations may be sent to Spring River Health and Wellness Center, in care of the funeral home.
