(From Knell Mortuary)
Robert Stephen (Steve) Ward, 69, Carthage, a long-time resident of the Jasper community, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, following complications of prostate cancer. Steve was born November 27, 1946 to the late Elsie Mae (Wilson) Ward and Harry N. Ward at Cox Hospital in Springfield, MO. Born three months premature and weighing just over two pounds, Steve survived with a strong will to succeed and overcome challenges; traits which became the hallmark of his character for the next seven decades.
Steve met Maribeth Still, the love of his life, while they were both working in the family printing business. The two have been inseparable life and work partners, and best friends, for more than 50 years. They married on January 26, 1968; she survives. He and Maribeth owned Ward Printing in Jasper for many years. They sold their farm in November to move closer to medical care in Carthage.
Steve also had notable experience in public and community service. He is a former mayor of Jasper, MO, served in Washington D.C. on the staff of former 7th District Congressman Gene Taylor, and was instrumental in creating the Jasper Ambulance Service.
Steve is survived by his wife, a brother, Richard “Dick” Ward (wife Elizabeth Healey), Kansas City, MO; two aunts, Jane Beard, Kenilworth, IL, and Eleanor Miller, Whittier, CA; and many cousins, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.
A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House of the Four States, Joplin, MO in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO 64836.
