Marie Polston

Mary “Marie” Polston, age 95, of Sheldon, Missouri, passed unexpectedly, Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Oakview Estates in Frontenac, Kansas.

Marie was born April 12, 1920 at Cherokee, Kansas to John and Maggie (Castagno) Simon. After graduating high school at Cherokee, Kansas, she attended Mt. Carmel Hospital Nursing School, in Pittsburg, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1941, and worked at Mt. Carmel Hospital for many years.

On January 13, 1945, she married John Francis Polston and he preceded her in death on February 4, 1986. In 1968 she received her Missouri license and worked at the Missouri State Hospital for 20 years. She and her husband John owned and operated Polston Market in Sheldon for many years. After selling the market in 1966 they moved to a farm Northwest of Sheldon and lived there until 2013, when she moved to Frontenac. She was an avid Kansas City Royals fan and a NASCAR fan and was always proud of her granddaughter Ashley for becoming an attorney. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nevada, Missouri and attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church part of the time in Lamar. She was also a member of the Jolly Senior Citizens of Sheldon, VFW Auxiliary, and Retired Nurses Group.

Marie is survived by one son Mike Polston and his wife, Barb of Lamar; one daughter, Maggie Polston of San Jose, California; one granddaughter, Ashley Polston; and one brother Floyd Simon and his wife Lucille of Frontenac; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rosary was held Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Daniel Funeral Home followed by visitation. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 15, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial following at Sheldon Cemetery.

Contributions are suggested to Lamar St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Humane Society of Barton County, or Wounded Warrior Project in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
