Ashes

(From the Jasper County Sheriff's Office)

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office regretfully announces the passing of retired K9, Ashes.

Ashes began his K9 career in 2007 with the Missouri Division of Fire Safety as an accelerant detection K9. Ashes was trained to detect hydrocarbons, which are petroleum-based products commonly used as accelerants in incendiary fires.

In 2010, Ashes was donated to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office where he was assigned to work with Detective Chris Carriger. Carriger and Ashes began to work and train together, a strong bond grew between the two. The two later became a certified K9 team and assisted in multiple arson investigations.

On May 22, 2011, the bond between K9 and handler became even stronger as Detective Carriger clung to his partner while an F5 tornado ripped through their house and destroyed all of their possessions. Afterwards, the two were inseparable and they continued to work as a team, assisting law enforcement and fire departments in arson investigations throughout southwest Missouri.

Since retirement, Ashes has enjoyed the sweet life of retirement. He spent his time watching tv, hanging out in his dog house and roaming the family farm. Ashes enjoyed chasing rabbits and squirrels, but only for the fun of the chase, he didn't have a mean bone in his body to hurt them.

Ashes was an amazing partner and will be missed dearly by Chris and the Carriger family.
