Dale Wright

(From Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home)

Mr. Dale Burton Wright, 94, of Carterville, Missouri, left this life for Heaven on Friday morning, April 24, 2020, while at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri.

Dale was born on June 22, 1925, in Willmar, Minnesota, to the late James Burton and Iva Pearl (Borland) Wright. When Dale was eleven the family relocated to Missouri. Dale was a member of the “Greatest Generation” ever known.

On September 3, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He and one other recruit caught a train in Carthage and headed for boot camp in San Diego, California, stopping along the way to pick up many recruits in route to California. Dale earned four Battle Stars during his service. He was a Private First Class Rifle Sharpshooter. He was in the battle of the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged on November 20, 1945, returning home to join his family in Carthage, Missouri.

He worked for Carthage Marble operating a jackhammer for a few months. After that he went to work at Hercules Powder Company in Carthage for 87 cents an hour. He retired in 1987 after thirty-nine years of service. Dale had many hobbies over the years. He used the G.I. Bill after WW-II to get his pilot’s license. He enjoyed playing tennis, golf, pool, chess and bow hunting, but most of all he loved to fish and hunt with his beloved dog, Lady.

Dale married the love of his life, Hazel Mae Russell on October 14, 1955 and together they shared sixty years before her passing on October 29, 2015. He is also preceded by his parents; a daughter; a brother; and a sister.

Dale was an awesome father, grandpa and the best great-papa ever and was dearly loved by his entire family. He cherished visits from his family and in return, they enjoyed listening to his many wonderful stories. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Dale is survived by his daughter, Becky Palmer and husband, Ed, of Webb City; a granddaughter, Rachael Durland and husband, Chris, of Webb City; a grandson, Brad Callen and wife, Amy, of Chino Hills, California; four great grandchildren, Amelia and Joseph Durland and Nicholas and Derek Callen; as well as a host of other family and friends.
