Orville James Skaggs, age 91 of Joplin, passed away at 6:14 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mount Vernon.
Born March 19, 1923 in Lockwood, MO, he was the son of the late Charlie and Eva Huskinson Skaggs. Orville was a cattle and agriculture farmer all of his working life. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Orville moved to Joplin in 1989. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Joplin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Steve Skaggs in 1988; and two brothers.
Survivors include a son, Carl Skaggs of Joplin; two daughters, Vickie Hulette and Roxanne Nichols, both of Joplin; a brother, Denzil Skaggs and wife Myrtle of Lamar, MO; seven grandchildren, Cassie Jankowski, Misty Skaggs, Carla Tupin, Steve Elijah Hosp, Christian Daugherty, Robert Matthews and Melissa Doke; eleven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Maple Grove Cemetery near Lockwood. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, in care of the mortuary.
