Jim Palmer

(From Brenner Mortuary)

On Sunday December 6, 2015, James (Jim) Robert Palmer passed from this life to join his lifelong partner, Shirley Ann (Forshay) Palmer who preceded him in death on December 30, 2012.

Jim was surrounded by his family including his three sons, Mike (Patty) Palmer, Bob (Marsha) Palmer & Jerry Palmer. Jim was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren. Jim truly enjoyed his time with his Grandchildren and Great grandchildren. A new baby in the family was one of Jim’s favorite events and he was happiest when surrounded by his family. Jim was born and raised on a farm near Mindenmines Missouri on June 21, 1927. He shared the hard work of farming with his Father, Elias Anson, Mother Irene (Weems), 2 brothers and 3 sisters thru the Depression years. An intelligent young man, Jim graduated at the top of his class in 1943. Jim was a WWII veteran serving his country in the US Navy in Hawaii. Upon returning from service to his country, Jim attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg. He then took up a career with Kansas City Southern Railways in the “shops” of Pittsburg serving an apprenticeship as a railroad car builder in 1946.

Jim met and married his “life partner” of 64 years, Shirley Forshay, in Pittsburg in 1948. He decided to form his own business, Home Modernizing Company, in 1960. Jim was a self-taught craftsman in nearly anything that he tried. He was a stickler for quality and had a reputation for doing nothing but quality work for those who he served. He started out in the remodeling business for homes but quickly moved on to building homes from basement to rooftop. He developed a reputation thru the years as one of the best builders in the area. He provided high quality homes for hundreds of families throughout Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri. To this day, realtors refer to a “Palmer House” to designate a high quality home. Jim retired from his career as a Home Builder in 1993. He spent the rest of his life caring for his wife and enjoying the company of his family. Jim will be sorely missed by those he loved and who loved him. Jim was preceded in death by his spouse, parents and his brothers and sisters.

Con-celebrated Mass of Christian Burial is set for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 10, 2015, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Frontenac, with Father Larry Parker and Father Thomas Stroot as celebrants. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Brenner Mortuary, where the family will receive friends following until 8:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and/or Angels Among Us.
