Harold Layton, passed away on December 13, 2015 due to complications from Alzheimer’s at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg, Kansas. He was 91 years old.
Harold was born on July 29, 1924 in Sylvania, Ohio to Albert Guy Layton and Rebecca Grace (Amos) Layton. He graduated from Bath Consolidated High School in Fairborn, Ohio in 1942. On June 30, 1942, Harold joined the United States Navy. Harold bravely served his country during World War II as Motor Machinist’s Mate, 2nd Class. Aboard his ship, Harold fought during the Battle of Normandy and earned a Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
Harold settled in Joplin, Missouri after the war and married Dorothy Cruse on June 7, 1946. They were married for 57 years until her death on April 17, 2004. During his life in Joplin, Harold worked for Atlas Powder Company (ICI America) for over 35 years, retiring in 1987.
Harold’s home in Joplin was destroyed in the May 2011 tornado. Fortunately, Harold was away from his home at the time and survived the devastating tornado. After the tornado, he moved to Carthage, MO.
Harold was well-known and loved as a frequent attendee of activities at the Carthage Senior Center. He was a member of American Legion Post 13, Joplin, MO. He enjoyed collecting coins and listening to live music, particularly Blue Grass. Harold attended First United Methodist Church of Carthage.
Harold is preceded in death by his wife; Dorothy, parents; Albert and Rebecca, his brothers; Norval Layton and Guy Layton, half brother; Or Range Layton, and half sister; Bonnie Mathes.
Harold is survived by several nieces and nephews and longtime friend, Myrl Hawks.
Services will be held at Mason Woodard Chapel on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. Visitation will be held from 10-10:30 AM. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. James Lee at 10:30 AM. Interment will be at Ozark Memorial Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church or the Over 60 Center, Carthage, MO. Flowers and donations will be received at Mason Woodard Mortuary.
