Marvin Earl Greer, Sr., age 93, Joplin, passed away at 10:09 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born November 22, 1922 in Joplin to the late George Greer and Virgie May Gipson Greer and was a lifetime Joplin resident.
Marvin worked at Junge Bakery and Gateway Creamery before he took a job as a machinist at Vickers, Inc. He also worked 37 years at First United Methodist Church as a custodian.
He loved the St. Louis Cardinals and coached in the local softball leagues for several seasons. Marvin enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. Marvin was a faithful member of Blendville Christian Church and served his country during World War II as a veteran of the United States Army.
He married Anna Betterton on October 10, 1942 in Joplin. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2013.
Marvin was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Ann Greer; a grandson, Stephen Painter; four sisters and one brother.
Survivors include three sons, Marvin Greer, Jr. and his wife, Linda, Joplin, Tommy Greer and his wife, Gayle, Joplin, Doug Greer and his wife, Ruth, Oronogo; two daughters, Donna Maples and her husband, Larry, Joplin, Linda Greer, Tacoma, WA; three sisters-in-law, Jo Greer, Joplin, Sally Betterton, Joplin, Claradene Betterton, Webb City; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and 34 great great grandchildren.
Services are planned for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Roger Nichols will officiate. Interment will follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery with full military honors. Pallbearers will be Terry Greer, Brian Greer, Tommy Greer, Chris Greer, Kevin Maples and Larry Maples. Honorary pallbearers will be Trea Greer, Garrett Greer and Ryan Greer. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Blendville Christian Church, in care of Parker Mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
