Mae Smith, age 92 of Joplin, passed away at 3:35 a.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Communities of Wildwood Ranch.
Born September 22, 1923 in Joplin, she was the daughter of the late William P. Trimble and Minnie E. Lane Trimble and was a lifetime Joplin resident. A graduate of Joplin High School, she had worked at Freeman Hospital and OB/GYN Associates. She was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church, Ruth Chapter No. 177 Order of Eastern Star and the Ozark Gateway Chapter of ABWA. Mae was a surrogate aunt to the children of three doctors' families.
On May 31, 1942, she married Bill C. Smith in Joplin. He preceded her in death on October 25, 1976. A brother, Art Carver, and two sisters, Marie Cole and Margaret Fernandes also preceded her.
Survivors include a son, William A. Smith of Tulsa, OK; a daughter, Evelyn Steele and husband Mike of Joplin; four grandsons, Donnie Goettel and wife Pam of Joplin, Jerry Smith and wife Amye, Mike Goettel, Jeff Smith and wife Jennifer, all of Tulsa; two granddaughters, Daniela Schaebel of Tulsa, Monica Mitchell of Carl Junction and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Forest Park Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. John Swadley officiating. Interment will follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Donnie Goettel, Jerry Smith, Jeff Smith and Mike Steele serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday.
