Lou Starks

(From Parker Mortuary)

Mary L. Starks, known affectionately as Lou, passed away on July 4, 2026, in Joplin, Missouri, at the remarkable age of 104.

She was born on April 5, 1922, in Covington, Oklahoma, to John Arthur and Gertrude Alice (Giett) McDaniel. Lou grew up with the values of hard work, faith, and devotion to family that would guide her throughout her long and meaningful life. She graduated from Neosho High School in 1941 and carried the determination and quiet strength of that generation with her in all that she did.

Lou worked for a number of department stores as a bookkeeper, a role she performed with care, accuracy, and dependability. She retired in the late 1950s after years of faithful service. Her work reflected the same steady character that defined her life, and those who knew her appreciated her reliability and gentle manner.

Faith was an important part of Lou’s life. She was Christian and attended services at Sojourners Christian Church, where she found fellowship and comfort. Her faith was evident in the way she lived, as she was known for being loving and selfless. She cared deeply for others and placed the needs of her family and friends close to her heart. Lou especially loved her family, and her devotion to them was one of the greatest expressions of her life.

She is survived by her son, Ralph (R.J.) Starks and Cindy of Sugar Land, Texas, and her sister, Lorene Mackey of Kansas City and two grandchildren. Her family was a source of great joy to her, and she treasured the time she spent with them. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her loving husband of 45 years, Ralph James Starks. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Lou lived a long life filled with love, faith, and the quiet dignity that comes from a life well lived. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her selfless spirit, and the warmth she shared with those around her. Her presence was a blessing to her family and to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those she loved.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, July 13, 2026 at 10 a.m. at the Parker Mortuary chapel with Pastor Colleen Carroll officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
