(From Parker Mortuary)Rita May Faulkner, age 79, of Joplin, MO, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin.
Rita was born on November 30, 1946, in Fort Scott, KS, to the late James and Opal (Simpson) Dunsworth. Rita grew up on a farm in Hammond, Kansas, where she learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance at an early age. She graduated from Fort Scott High School, and her roots in her hometown remained an important part of who she was throughout her life.
After her school years, Rita worked for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Missouri. She enjoyed working the land, driving tractors, and being around the farm animals she loved so much. Her interests also included hula hooping, playing the accordion, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. Rita was also a dedicated member of her community in her own quiet way. She took part in organizing her high school reunions and was involved with the 4H group, showing her commitment to staying connected with others and supporting the places and people that mattered to her.
Those who knew Rita will remember her as a kind, friendly, and selfless woman who made life better for others simply by being herself. She had a way of making people feel welcome and valued.
Rita is survived by her two sons, Joe Buffington and Jerry Buffington; five grandchildren, Katie Dos Santos and husband, Rick, Lucas Buffington, Quincy Buffington, Kensie Buffington, and Joe Buffington Jr.; and sister, Karen Hutchison.
Coordination of arrangements from Freeman Hospital to her final resting place are under the special care and direction of Parker Mortuary.
