(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Thurman Ray Taylor, affectionately known to family, friends, students, and athletes as “Papa T” and “Coach T,” passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at the age of 84.
Born on September 27, 1941, in Roper, North Carolina, Thurman was the beloved son of James and Helen Taylor. He graduated from high school in 1960 and attended Chowan University, where he excelled both academically and athletically. He was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, played tight end on the football team, and was later honored with induction into the Chowan University Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the program.
Following his time at Chowan, Thurman proudly enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper with the prestigious 101st Airborne Division. His military service reflected the courage, discipline, and dedication that would define the rest of his life.
After completing his military service, Thurman continued his education, earning a master’s degree in psychology from Nicholls State University. He devoted his professional life to education, inspiring generations of students as a high school teacher of biology, history, and physical education. Beyond the classroom, he found great joy in coaching basketball and football, where he became affectionately known as “Coach T.” Whether teaching science, leading a practice, or offering words of encouragement, Thurman never missed an opportunity to share his knowledge and help others grow.
Above all, Thurman was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Kim Taylor (Psajdl); his children, Caesar Taylor, Liberty Taylor (Steve MacNamara), Thomas Taylor (Nicole), and Thor Taylor (Jennifer); 12 cherished grandchildren; and 8 beloved great-grandchildren. His family was the center of his life, and he took immense pride in each of them.
Thurman will be remembered for his warm smile, generous spirit, quick wit, and unwavering commitment to teaching and mentoring everyone he met. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and capable, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.
Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of service, education, kindness, and love will continue to live on through his family, friends, former students, athletes, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
