(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Michael Joe Whelan, 66, of Carl Junction, Missouri, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. Mick was born November 10, 1959, in Medicine Lodge, KS to Gene and Joan Whelan. He was raised in Kansas, where he developed strong Midwestern values that would guide him in life.
A proud graduate of Kansas State University, Mick earned both a BS in Economics and an MBA. He believed learning was a lifelong pursuit and that mindset guided him through a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in international business.
Mick built a career that combined his business acumen with his love of travel and experiencing new cultures. His career took him to 72 countries where he cultivated lasting relationships with colleagues and customers. One of life’s adventures provided him the opportunity to live in Germany with his wife, Heather, for two years while part of the leadership team of Coleman Europe. Together they embraced the experience and created lasting memories. Mick believed travel broadened perspectives, strengthened relationships and was one of life’s greatest teachers.
Away from work, Mick appreciated life’s quieter moments. He found joy tending his garden, feeding and watching the birds, drinking good wine, all while surrounded by his beloved Airedales. Those who knew him will remember his humility, unassuming presence and generous spirit.
Mick is survived by his wife, Heather Whelan; his children, Ashley (John) Heryer, Adam (Megan) Whelan, Christopher (Madison) Whelan and Catherine Whelan; his grandchildren, Rowan, Nate and Norah Heryer, and Graham and Gracie Whelan; and his siblings, Greg Whelan, Tim Whelan and Karen Whelan.
He will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026, from 5:00 – 7:00 at Mason-Woodard Mortuary in Joplin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Airedale Terrier Rescue Association.
