Jo Evans

(From Parker Mortuary)

Jo Evelyn Evans, age 84, of Diamond, Missouri, departed this life on Monday evening, March 23, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, after a brief illness. She entered this life on September 26, 1941, in Calvin, Louisiana, born to the union of the late Sherman and Grace (Palmer) Carpenter. Her journey began as a bright-eyed graduate of Calvin High School in 1959. While living in Calvin, she met the love of her life, Jerry Malcolm "Mack" Evans. Their love story, which began with Mack's instant affection and Jo's reserved admiration, blossomed into a lifelong partnership after they wed on May 15, 1959.

Jo's early years with Mack were spent in San Diego, California, supporting his service on the USS Coral Sea. The young couple returned to Louisiana with their first child, embracing the life of a growing family as Mack worked as a welder. Jo's unwavering support was evident when Mack felt the call to ministry. Despite initial doubts, Jo stood by Mack as they embarked on a spiritual journey, pastoring churches in Louisiana before being led to Joplin, Missouri, in 1972.

In Joplin, Jo and Mack found a small church in need of leadership and love. Under their guidance, the church flourished, outgrowing its original building and moving into the historic Fox Theater, which they acquired through Mack's shrewd negotiation. Jo's role was pivotal in the church's growth, which became known for its inclusivity and outreach. The couple's dedication to their faith was further demonstrated as they pastored two churches simultaneously, one in Joplin and another in Beckley, West Virginia. Their ministry expanded as they trained ministers, spread the gospel through media, and supported churches nationwide.

Jo's interests were as vast as her heart, sharing her musical talents with Mack on gospel albums and embracing the role of a loving mother, grandmother, and partner. After Mack retired from active ministry in 2002, they cherished their time together, traveling and managing their ranch. Yet, their calling was never far from their hearts, leading them to establish The Sheep Shed in Neosho, Missouri. There, they continued to share God's love with those often overlooked by society, embodying the compassion of Jesus Christ.

Jo's legacy is carried on by her three sons, Parrish, Jock, and Jeremy, her daughter Melody, and their families, and a sister, Shirley Mixon, who will forever cherish her memory. Her life was a beautiful tapestry of faith, love, and unwavering commitment to her family and community. Jo Evelyn Evans will be remembered as a guiding light, a steadfast partner in ministry, and a loving matriarch whose impact will resonate for generations to come.

Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Sunday, March 29, 2026 at The Sheep Shed with Pastor Dale Oglesby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Mark Smith, John Hughes, Matt Persinger, Randy Billings, Randy Beebe and Zane Persinger. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:15 am on Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being accepted in c/o the mortuary to be evenly distributed amongst Jo’s favorite charities. Arrangements are under the care of Parker Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri.
