Roger Kolstad

(From Knell Mortuary)

Roger John Kolstad, known to many simply as Roger, passed away on April 30, 2026, in Carthage, Missouri, at the age of 82. He was born on November 13, 1943, in Eagle Bend, Minnesota, the son of the late Gust and Clara (Thorpe) Kolstad, where he began a life that would be marked by hard work, steady character, and a genuine love for people.

Roger grew up in the Eagle Bend area, and met his future wife, Illamae Thelen, in the country school there. He graduated from Eagle Bend High School with the class of 1962. The two would get married on November 21, 1964 in Clarissa, Minnesota. They were married for 62 beautiful years. Those who knew him throughout his life will remember him as a man who was extremely friendly, wise, and handy, with a practical spirit and a kind heart that left a lasting impression on family, friends, and neighbors alike.

Roger made his living as a carpenter, a trade that suited him well and reflected the dependable nature for which he was known. He took pride in working with his hands and in doing a job well done, whether he was building, repairing, or lending a helping hand. Roger approached his work with an attitude of care, and integrity; he believed that there was no such thing as “I can’t”. He was the kind of man others could count on, and his presence brought reassurance and strength to those who knew him.

Outside of work, Roger enjoyed talking to people. Roger never met a stranger he couldn’t talk to. Anyone that had ever met him knows how much he loved to talk. In his later years, Roger also stayed active and productive by cutting and selling wood; a pastime that combined his love of useful work and talking to the people who bought it. Roger had a way of making others feel welcome and at ease, often handing out candy bars to any and everyone. He valued conversation, companionship, and the simple pleasure of being among family and friends. His warmth and easygoing nature made him a familiar and comforting presence in the lives of many.

Roger is survived by his wife, Illamae, and his five children; Tim Kolstad and his wife Danlynn of Avon, Minnesota; Mark Kolstad and his wife Sherry of Austin, Texas; Dale Kolstad of Amarillo, Texas; David Kolstad and his wife Salli of Bemidji, Minnesota; and Bonnie Gilbert and her husband Ryan of Sartell, Minnesota. He also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and pride. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.

His family was central to his life, and he cherished the bonds they shared. The love he gave and the example he set in everything he did will continue to live on through them. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him and hearing his stories.

Per Roger’s request, there will not be any services or memorial.
