(From Simpson Funeral Home)Wayne Loyd Welch, affectionately known as "Poppa Wayne," was a remarkable man whose life was a testament to resilience, adventure, and inspiration. Born on September 26, 1937, in Richmond, California, Wayne's journey led him to many corners of the world before he found his home in Joplin, Missouri, where he resided for fifty years.
A retired veteran of the United States Air Force, Wayne served his country with distinction and honor for twenty-one years, including a notable tenure in Berlin, Germany. His adventurous spirit was perhaps best embodied in his love for baseball, particularly his devotion to the St. Louis Cardinals. Wayne passed away on May 4, 2026, but his radiant spirit continues to inspire those who knew him.
An inspiring figure, Wayne was known for his generosity and his ever-present commitment to his family. Indeed, it was his family, especially his beloved mother, Reatha, who mattered most to him. He was a pillar of support for his brothers, a trait reflective of his kind-hearted and generous nature. His love was not only confined to his family but extended to the community. In his youth, Wayne had earned the title of Golden Glove Boxer, a testament to his resilience and determination. Despite his many achievements, Wayne remained humble and kind-hearted, always ready to lend a hand or share a smile. As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Wayne embodied this sentiment, touching countless hearts with his love and kindness.
Wayne is survived by his sons, Jerry (Susan) Welch & Ronnie Welch his brother Cecil Welch; sister in law, Sharon Welch, his grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in passing by his loving wife Sumiko Welch; parents Lloyd & Reatha Welch; brothers, David Welch, George Welch and the mother of his children, Eva Ritter.
In remembering Wayne, we honor a life well-lived and a man well-loved. Wayne was widowed, having lost his cherished spouse, Sumiko. He was also predeceased by his father, Lloyd Welch, and his mother, Reatha Welch. Wayne's legacy lives on in the love and memories of his son, Jerry Welch, and the many lives he touched. His life reminds us of the beauty in everyday moments, the value of resilience, and the importance of family.
