Garrett Bresee

Garrett Lee Bresee, age 25, Joplin, passed away Friday morning at Freeman West Hospital after a sudden illness.

Garrett was born March 24, 1990 in Joplin to Rick and Robin (Richey) Bresee and was a lifetime area resident.

Garrett worked alongside his family at Bresee Trash Service. He attended Seneca schools and enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and riding four wheelers.

Garrett is survived by his life partner, Deeann Taylor, Joplin, their daughter, Aubrey Lynn Bresee, Joplin; his parents, Rick and Robin; two brothers, Andrew Bresee, Seneca, Cory Bresee, Joplin; and many other extended family members.

Garrett has been taken for cremation. The family is planning a family memorial service at a later date.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

Donna Reed

Donna Lee Reed, age 85, of Lamar, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Lockwood.

     Donna was born May 4, 1929, the oldest of the three children of Floyd and Alice (Parker) Schell.  After graduating from Golden City High School, she married James Anthony Reed on June 30, 1947 at Tacoma, Washington where Jim was stationed in the U.S. Army.  They returned to Barton County to farm and raise their two sons, Terrel and Ben.  In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, homemaker, and farm wife, Donna had worked at Big Smith, Blue Top, and Papa’s Pizza.  She was an active member of Oakton United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and positively influenced many young families through MOPS.  Even as her health was failing, Donna continued to be a diligent prayer warrior for family, friends, neighbors, and people she had never met.

     After sharing 54 years of marriage, Jim passed away May 31, 2002.  Donna was also preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Alice; her brother Roger Schell; her sister, Joan Reed; a granddaughter, Tammy Reed; and a grandson, Brad Reed.

     Survivors include two sons, Terrel Lee (Yolanda) Reed, McKinney, Texas and Ben Anthony Reed, Jasper, Missouri; two grandsons, Adam (Denette) Reed, Kaneohe, Hawaii and Tim (Jenny) Reed, Virginia Beach, Virginia; and seven great-grandchildren, Benton, Olivia, Chloe, Whittley, Marissa, Rebekah, and Renee.

     Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 1^st at Oakton United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Garfield officiating.  Burial was in Barton City Cemetery northeast of Liberal, Missouri.

     Memorial contributions are suggested to the Brad Reed Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.

Peggy Friley

Peggy Lou Friley, 82, Carthage, passed away Monday, March 30, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin. Peggy Lou Bellomy was born January; 13, 1933 in Columbus, Ohio; a daughter of the late Glenn M. Bellomy and Esther M. (Wrotring) Bellomy. She attended public schools in Columbus, Ohio and was a high school graduate in Columbus. She married David M. Friley on September 9, 1948 in Las Vegas, Nevada; he preceded her in death on May 31, 2002. Peggy enjoyed giving her time and talent to the Jasper School kindergarten class for several years by sewing Christmas stockings. The children referred to her as the “little old lady with a lot of fire”.

Survivors include four daughters; Kathy (James) Atkisson, Lamar, MO, Kelly (Ernest) Houser, Jamestown, OH, Karla (Les) Lambeth, Carthage and Kandy (Jim) Compton, Wilmington, OH; two brothers; Rick (Elaine) Friley, Newark, OH and Randy (Louise) Friley, Carthage; 16 grandchildren, several great and great great grandchildren.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

Visitation was held from Thursday, April 2 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, April 3 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. William Snyder

William Russell Snyder, 83, rural Carthage, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin. William Russell Snyder was born May 5, 1931, a son of the late Ira Snyder and Lena (Markley) Snyder, on the family farm east of Carthage. He was a 1949 graduate of Sarcoxie High School. In 1952 he married Christine Thompson; she preceded him in death in 1994. He married Carol Wilkinson in 1995; she survives. Russell was a farmer, a school bus driver and a milk hauler. He was a member of the Center Point Christian Church where he served as a deacon.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Debra Harkey, Reeds, MO and a son, John Snyder, Reeds, MO; step children, Janice Clark, Cathy Chew, Rob Wilkinson and Cris Wilkinson, several step grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Levi (Katherine) Snyder, Reeds, MO; four sisters, Alice Bowers, Carthage, Betty Tatum, Ozark, MO, Edith Willard, Reeds, MO and Barbara Smith, Carthage; four grandchildren, Tammy Hoover, Tracy Guy, Troy Foster and Brittany Snyder, several great grandchildren. Russell was preceded in death by one sister, Vesta Ziller, four brothers, Rex Snyder, Glenn Snyder, Herbert Snyder and Harold Snyder and one grandson, Cory Foster.

Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 PM, Friday, April 3 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 4 at the Center Point Christian Church, NE of Carthage. Interment will follow at Fasken Cemetery. Joy Kimbrough

Joyce ‘Joy’ E. Kimbrough, 89, Nevada, died March 31, 2015 at Spring River Christian Village, following a short illness. 

Joy was born Jan. 11, 1926 in Neosho and was a lifelong area resident. She worked at Cudahay cheese for over 15 years and was a homemaker. She loved to garden, dance, animals and spending time with her family. 

Joy and William ‘Glen’ Kimbrough were married on June 19, 1965 in Neosho and he preceded her in death on June 4, 2005. She is survived by three children, Jim Burrell and wife, Janet of Nevada; Nancy Ann Buzzard and husband, Steve of Shell Knob and Jenny Soldavini and husband, Gary of Roswell, Georgia; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Jack Woodhead

Jack C. Woodhead, age 75 of Carthage, MO, passed away at 12:19 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center in Carthage after a lengthy illness.

Born September 16, 1939 in Kansas City, KS, he was the son of the late Clarence Earl Woodhead and Dorothy Lorraine Stubbs Woodhead. He graduated from Shawnee Mission High School, attended Graceland College in Lamoni, IA, then transferred to Emporia University in Emporia, KS, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and German and later his Master of Science in Education. He taught Biology for two years at Derby High School in Kansas before beginning his 30-year career with the Missouri Department of Conservation as an Education Consultant. He worked in that capacity in Eureka, MO for 16 years and in Carthage for 15 years, retiring in 1998. Jack was one of five Education Consultants involved in the development of the Kindergarten through 8th grade Conservation Education curriculum which is used today. He conducted teacher workshops and consulted on wildlife area nature trails. He authored several Conservation pamphlets covering subjects such as wild edible plants, invasive plant and animal species and other topics. Jack had lived in Carthage the past 31 years and was a Deacon in the Community of Christ church. It was evident to anyone who knew him that he was an avid reader, turkey and deer hunter and fisherman. In his early life he enjoyed woodcarving and later created handmade cannons with his metal lathe which he enjoyed firing every year on New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July.

On December 27, 1964 he married Annetta A. Jilg (surviving) in Wichita. Together they raised three daughters. They and their families include Jalayne Osborn (Doug) of Carthage, Jennifer Vanberg (Paul) of Stillwell, KS, and Carolyn Buotte (Mark) of Key West, FL. Additional surviving family includes granddaughter Tess Vanberg; six step grandchildren; seven great-step grandchildren; his brother, John Woodhead (Carol) of Harrisonville, MO; his two sisters, Alice Hughes (Rolland) of Lee’s Summit, MO and Arlene Leonard (Lee) of Overland Park, KS, as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to say a special thanks to Mercy Hospice for their compassionate and invaluable services and to the skilled and untiring caregivers of Home Instead Senior Care.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at Victory Baptist Church, Carthage, MO, on May 30 at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation be made to Mercy Hospice of the National Parkinson’s Foundation. Joy Gauss

Joy Marie Gauss, age 68, Joplin, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital after a long illness.

Joy was born July 9, 1946 in Joplin to the late Truman Graham and Helen Hardy Graham and had lived in the Joplin area most of her life.

She worked in the transportation industry as a secretary for Glen’s Diesel, MNX and C.F.I. for many years. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary.

Joy married Robert John Gauss on October 12, 1990 in Miami, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on June 11, 2009.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff Rose and his wife, Michelle, Henderson, Nevada, Mike Rose, Bullhead, Arizona; a daughter, Lori Rose and her fiancé, Anthony Mann, Joplin; two brothers, Eldon Graham, Lubbock, Texas, Donald Graham; seven grandchildren, Shelby, Dylan, Aaron, Austin, Kathryn, Dakota, Serynity; and six great grandchildren, Harley, Carter, Sean, Laney, Lilllie and Isabella.

A memorial service is planned for Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Bob Simon will officiate. The family will receive friends following the services at the mortuary.
