Mary Scherer

Mary Christene Scherer, age 84, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away at 6:25 p.m. on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in Mt. Vernon. She was born June 8, 1941, in Monroe, Iowa, the daughter of Tone and Bessie (Robison) Aalbers.

Mary was a 1959 graduate of Monroe High School in Monroe, Iowa. Mary served in the United States Army and was a Post Commander for the American Legion Post 374 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was of the Presbyterian faith.








On December 8, 1979, she married Ronald Scherer in Des Moines, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 27, 2024.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Lori Leporte and her husband, John, of Aurora, Missouri; one stepson, J.R. Scherer of Winterset, Iowa; two stepdaughters, Toni Flood of Maricopa, Arizona and Katie Murray of Algona, Iowa; four sisters, Shirley (Ralph) McGregor of Reasnor, Iowa, Charlotte (Curtis) Prather of Knoxville, Iowa, Betty (Duane) Sabin of Pella, Iowa, and Sally (Steven) Knoll of Lawrence, Kansas; three brothers, Richard (Barb) Aalbers of Monroe, Iowa, Bruce Aalbers of Monroe, Iowa and Jerry (Sandy) Aalbers of Pella, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Rebecca Aalbers of Olympia, Washington and Gail (Gregory) Stoller of Grand Junction, Colorado; one brother-in-law, Gary (Terri) Scherer of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Tone, and Bessie; her husband, Ronald; three brothers, Fred (Josephine) Aalbers, Russell Aalbers and Larry Aalbers; two grandchildren and a nephew.








No services are planned currently. Arrangements are under the direction of Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, in Mt. Vernon, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to the American Legion Post 374, at 3712 2nd Ave, Des Moines, Iowa 50313, or the Missouri Veterans’ Home Assistance League, at 1600 S. Hickory, Mt. Vernon, Missouri 65712 or in care of the funeral home.
