Nick Thompson

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Nicklas Budd Thompson, age 37, passed away on December 21, 2025 after injuries sustained in an accident.

Nick was born December 24, 1987 to David Leon Thompson and Norma Jean Budd Davidson, in Fort Scott, Kansas. He graduated with the Class of 2006 in Liberal, Missouri, and took some classes at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas.

Nick was talented when it came to construction, and worked doing roofing, welding, painting, and other related jobs over the years. He was a traveler, and enjoyed visiting Hawaii, North Dakota, and friends and family in Washington; never staying in one place for very long.

Nick had many friends as a result of his travels, but most of his friends were in Pittsburg, KS and Liberal, MO. He had a big heart, and a giving heart; always giving more than he had, and putting others before himself. He was an artistic soul. Proficient in musical arts, Nick was gifted with talent playing several instruments including the drums and guitar, as well as writing music and singing. He could be very goofy, and not only had a wonderful laugh but also loved making others laugh.

Nick was preceded in death by his mother Norma Davidson, and brother Douglas Davidson.

Survivors include his father David Thompson (wife Sarah) of Springfield, MO; siblings: Kevin Davidson, David Christopher Thompson of Ft. Collins, CO, Shannon Dawn Thompson of Joplin, MO, Shaylen Lane Thompson of Springfield, MO, and Barbie Woerly. Nick is also survived by his good friend, Jake Cole.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at the funeral home, to give Nick's friends an opportunity to pay their respects. On January 3, 2026, the family and church will host a Celebration of Life at Community Baptist Church in Pittsburg, Kansas, where Nick was a member. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to be made to the family to help with final expenses.
