Ernest Bidwell

Ernest Douglas Bidwell, 86, of Galena, Kansas, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026.

Ernest was born on May 13, 1939, to Harold Bidwell and Thelma Morris. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Throughout his life, Ernest was known for his sense of humor and his ability to make those around him laugh. He enjoyed spending his time fishing, reading books, telling his own stories, singing song after song, completing word searches, and enjoying as much Kentucky Fried Chicken as he could.








Ernest was a devoted family man. He was married to Catherine Bresee, and together they built a large and loving family. He is survived by their eight children; Charles Bidwell (Kris), Miami, OK, Ernest Bidwell Jr (Cassandra), Independence, KS, John Bidwell, Larned, KS, James Bidwell (Lori), Welch, OK, Naomi McGowen, Joplin, MO, Charlene Crofford, Joplin, MO, Linda Watson, Galena, KS, and Mary Horn (Jim), Galena, KS; 27 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren who will carry on his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Catherine, and several siblings.








Ernest was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home for cremation. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 pm, Monday, March 16, 2026 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

Ernest will be remembered for his humor, his love for simple pleasures, and the many memories he created with his family and friends.
