Steve Cohu

Steven Glenn Cohu, age 79, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023. He was born January 25, 1944, in Carthage, Missouri, the son of Carl and Eva (Kinney) Cohu.

Steve grew up in Diamond, Missouri, graduating from Diamond High School in 1962. He attended Oklahoma Christian College one year and transferred to Southwest Missouri State College graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1966.








Steve met his wife, Barbara Ann Haseltine, while at SMS and they were married on September 3, 1966. They moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he taught sixth grade in Hickman Mills and later Olathe, Kansas. He received his Master of Arts in Education from The University of Missouri in Kansas City in 1969.

Steve’s career as an elementary principal began in Palmyra, followed by Lockwood, Diamond, and Mount Vernon. He received a Specialist in Education-Education Administration from Southwest Missouri State University in 1984.

Steve enjoyed fishing, golf, and especially his part-time farming with cattle, hogs, and horses. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Steve was a member of the Mount Vernon Church of Christ where he served as an elder for several years.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Dana Joy.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Cohu of 56 years; two sons, Jeff Cohu (Jan) of Nashville, Tennessee, and Eric Cohu (Carolyn) of Little Rock, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Kylie Cohu of New York, New York, Baylor Cohu (Megan) of Little Rock, Arkansas, Cameron Cohu of Nashville, Tennessee, and Cassie Cohu of Little Rock, Arkansas; one great-grandson, Colt Cohu of Little Rock, Arkansas; one brother, Alvin Cohu (Linda) of Rancho Pales Verdes, California; three brothers-in-law, Stan, Ken, and Keith (Becky) Haseltine and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.








A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.

  1. Mr. Cohu was my very first principal when I began my teaching career in Mr Vernon. He was a quiet, gentle man who encouraged me to grow as an educator!
