(From Parker Mortuary)Phyllis J. Hoskins, 86, passed away on February 7, 2024, at Oak Pointe of Carthage Assisted Living. She was born at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, on June 19, 1937, to Willis A. McDowell and Opal B. McDowell of Joplin.
She was married to Gary T. Hoskins on October 13, 1956, at Forest Park Baptist Church in Joplin. She was a devoted and loving wife; they were happily married for 65 years at the time of his passing on January 17, 2022.
She was dearly loved by her three sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great children. Her kind nature, concern for others, happy spirit, wonderful smile and sense of humor will forever be remembered and treasured by all who knew her.
Hoskins was a 1955 graduate of Joplin High School. She attended Joplin Junior College and, many years later, Missouri Southern State College. Her early work experience included secretarial jobs at Burl M. Garvin Realty Inc. and Long-Bell Lumber Company Inc. in Joplin. She later worked at Broadview Lumber Co. in Carthage, Missouri. In 1979, she returned to work at Carthage Senior High School as a general secretary. In 1982, she became secretary to the high school principal. She remained in that role until her retirement in 1997, serving a total of 18 years for the school district.
She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Carthage, joining the church in 1971. She was a member of the Christian Women’s Club for several years. She had a lifelong faith in her savior Jesus Christ, and was baptized as a child with her father in Turkey Creek in Joplin.
The Hoskins family returned to Southwest Missouri in the fall of 1970, after living in Oklahoma for more than eight years. She enjoyed, in particular, talking about her fond memories of living in Oklahoma City between 1965 and 1970. There, she was a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Daffy Daisys Garden Club.
In retirement, she and her husband enjoyed their lake house in Shell Knob, Missouri, on Table Rock Lake. They spent their summers there for more than 15 years, hosting family and friends for many fun weekends.
Hoskins was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother and sister who passed away as infants, Gary McDowell and Charlotte McDowell. She is survived by: three sons, Mark (Cindi) Hoskins, Joplin; Brent (Beth) Hoskins, Lenexa, Kansas; and Mike (Suzi) Hoskins, Kansas City, Missouri; five grandchildren, Patrick (Ashley) Hoskins, Oronogo, Missouri, Mallory (B.J.) Huffman, Olathe, Kansas, Olivia Hoskins, Joplin, Missouri, Andrew (Erin) Hoskins, New York City, New York, and Matthew (Mykell), Chicago, Illinois; and four great-grandchildren, Brandon Hoskins, Melanie Hoskins, Desmond Huffman and Rigby Huffman.
