David Thornton

(From Nichols-Stephens Funeral Home)

David Warren Thornton, age 77, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at his home in Jay Oklahoma. David was born in Neosho, MO and had lived in the Grove area the last 37 years. He attended Stapleton school in Joplin and Seneca High School.

David was an accomplished tool and die engineer/machinist and built parts for the aeronautical and military industry throughout his career. He worked on projects from the moon rover to patriot and cruise missiles.

Beyond his professional achievements, David embraced life with an infectious enthusiasm. He approached each day as a holiday, cherishing every moment and living each day as his last. David’s warm and inviting nature made it impossible for him to meet a stranger. David was married to Rosalee Taylor from 1964 to 1980 and with her he was blessed with three children. Later in life David found Glinda Guthrie and together created 20 years of cherished memories.

In his free time, David indulged in various hobbies that brought him great pleasure. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent time fishing, hunting and camping. David was a proud member of Butler Baptist Church which he attended.

David is preceded in death by his birth parents, Ray Link and Vera Rawlings and his adopted parents George and Elma Thornton.

Left to cherish David’s memory:

Glinda Guthrie, sons: Doug Thornton (Daylene) of Oologah, OK, Kevin Thornton (Devon) of Carl Junction, MO; daughter, Amy Carpenter (Brian) of Grove, OK, brothers Jim Potts, Mike Potts, and Robert Hutchings; sisters: Sunny Albergucci, Cathy Whited, Gwen McCorkell and Sharon Mackey; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

A memorial to honor David’s life will be held on February 23, 2024, at Butler Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m.
