Norma Ferguson

(From Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home)

Norma L. Ferguson, sister, mother, grandmother and long-time resident of Altamont, passed away surrounded by her family, at 8:55 a.m., Monday, February 12, 2024, at Elmhaven Nursing Home in Parsons.

Norma was born on April 7, 1929, to Arthur and Mary Frances (Hodges) Foss in Rice County, Kansas. On May 27, 1946, Norma and Ellis Ferguson were united in marriage in Faulkner, Kansas. In 1955, the couple moved to Altamont, where they made a home for their family and had lived since.

Devoted to her Christian faith, Norma was active in the First Baptist Church of Altamont. She served as a Sunday School teacher, a sponsor for the Ann Judson Guild Group, a Vacation Bible School helper and as a driving force coordinating and serving many dinners for funerals and special occasions. She was instrumental in establishing the local “Tel-Line” by which senior citizens receive a daily phone call as a way to check on their safety and health. Norma’s devotion and service to her community touched many lives.

Always busy, Norma’s greatest joy came from caring for her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed baking, sewing, quilting, and crocheting. Grandma Pete always had cookies. A talented seamstress, Norma made dresses and suits for the attendants in her daughters’ weddings and her hand sewn quilts are heirlooms that will be treasured for generations. She shared her crocheting talent by gifting family, church members, friends and missions with crocheted and framed last names and “Jesus” plaques. Norma’s deeds will live long in the memories of her family, church and community. She will rest in peace with the Lord.

Her survivors include:

Four children – Martha Miller of Parsons, Kansas

Victor Ferguson and his wife, Brigitte, of McKinney, Texas

Rose Mary Ferguson of Carl Junction, Missouri

Laura Bennett and her husband, Stephen, of McCune, Kansas

12 grandchildren

25 great-grandchildren

Five great-great-grandchildren

Two sisters – Bettie Jean Nash of Altamont, Kansas

Jackie Nash of Grove, Oklahoma

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ellis Ferguson; an infant sister, Shirley Foss; twin brothers, Earl and Merle Foss; and son-in-law, Alan Miller; and great-grandson, Briar Miller.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the First Baptist Church of Altamont. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. until the service begins at the church. Burial will immediately follow the service at the Oswego Cemetery in Oswego.

Memorials are suggested to the church of the donor’s choice or to cancer research. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
