Joe Tournear

(From Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home)

Joseph Clarkson Tournear II (Joe), 89, of Joplin, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Spring River Christian Village.

Joseph was born on June 7, 1934, in Lacross, KS to the union of Joseph and Bonnie (Plunkett) Tournear. He married Vivian K. Rhudy in 1957 in Bartlesville, OK.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force and drove the ambulance in the Korean War.

After the Korean War he returned home and obtained his Associates Degree from Pittsburg State University. He then went on to work for American Steel, American Fixtures, and for the last 20 years as a union carpenter. Joseph loved working with his hands and helped build some incredible buildings. Some of those buildings include the Joplin Northpark Mall, Christian Church of Carl Junction, Springfield Mall, Kansas City Electrical Towers, and Branson buildings.

He enjoyed building trampolines, mopeds and dune buggies. He could fix any and everything you can think of. He enjoyed gardening in his spare time. At one time he raised angus cattle. He also had a strong love of animals. But, above everything he accomplished and built, nothing was more important to him than watching his children play sports. He was an extremely supportive father that could always be seen at Carl Junction football games or in the outfield of a baseball game cheering the boys on.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Danny Tournear.

Joe is survived by his three sons, Myung Taylor (Jae); Joe Tournear III (Linnet); Shawn Tournear (Jennie); and one daughter Carol Harshman (Gary); and 31 grand-children and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be sent to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville, Kansas.

Funeral arrangements are under the special care and direction of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home.
